Change & Phoenix, the long awaited release of early Red Beat’s final and most commercially accessible music was released on October 24th, 2017. The core of the band is formed by 3 brothers of legendary 80’s star, Howard Jones. In 1984 Red Beat signed a deal with German label ‘Zip’, part of the Jupiter Records group. They recorded two songs for a double A sided single with UB40’s producer Terry Barham in Jacobs Studios in Farnham, Surrey. The songs were then worked on using a Fairlight Sampling Computer at Jupiter’s Studios in Munich. On their release, the band, going under the name Red White & Phoenix, appeared on the German Chart TV Show, Formal Eins and performed the song ‘Power Reflex’. Early influences such as Steely Dan, Genesis and Stevie Wonder can be heard in the multilayered funk and jazz of Change & Phoenix. By the mid 80’s, having emerged from the dark cauldron of London’s post-punk scene, Red Beat were responding to the upsurge of funky dance rhythms. Influences such as Prince and Michael Jackson can be heard on songs like ‘Strangers at Midnight’ and ‘Alone in the Street’. The polyphonic synthesiser and drum machine also feature in songs like ‘Tubegeist’ and ‘All Night Celebration’. Echoes of Red Beat’s early forays into dub-reggae can be heard in the unique funk-reggae crossover groove in the album’s most thought provoking song, ‘Buying and Selling’.

Remastered tunes from early 80's London. The three Jones brothers still working with the guitar power of Kevin Mann for the bulk of the tunes which were recorded for Miles Copeland (former manager of the Police) in Ladbroke Grove , London. Legendary sound sculptor, Marc Lusardi also engineers two of the songs including the title track. One Welsh tune on the album was recorded at Sain Studios in North Wales with bass player Mark Whiteley (Folk Devils and The Stranglers), and produced by Dafydd Iwan and Hefin Ellis. Golden Ghost was recorded at the Boilerhouse in High Wycombe. All these songs were performed live in London and the home counties in 1983 and 1984. Red Beat went on to sign with a German label but that's a story for the next album.

Apocalyptic Dub-Rock from the streets of post punk London
All the tunes on this album were written and performed by cult band, Red Beat between 1979 and 1981. Some of them were originally released on vinyl and have been digitally re-mastered . Several tracks are taken from live recordings at Red Beat gigs in Middlesborough and Brighton in 1981 and have been reworked by vocalist Roy Jones aka dRedzilla. These include the tracks Ritual Sacrifice, Searching for Change, Cool War, Fire Dance and Child. The Wheel was reworked from a studio recording with added synth and new vocals in a more bluesy style. Mystical Cult is an uncut live recording run off the desk at the UK Subs gig at Middlesborough where Red Beat played support. The rock line up was Chris Thompson on bass, Kevin Mann on guitar, Paul Jones on drums and his brother Roy on vocals. Machines in Motion , Red Beat and Cut Dub have Martin Jones on guitar and Majid Ahmed on bass while the reggae tune More or Less Cut features Roy on bass. Roy also plays keyboards on The Wheel and Shadow Boxing.
During the time when these tunes were written and performed, the band lived in squats in London's Ladbroke Grove/Notting Hill Gate area. They were originally on Killing Joke's label, Malicious Damage and then formed there own label, Manic Machine Products and released their music through Rough Trade Distribution, making them one of the first real 'Indie' bands. They recorded a session for legendary BBC radio one DJ, Jon Peel in 1980, which he repeated twice. This is available only on the CD 'The Missing Album' which was released in 2004. The version of the hard hitting track, 'See' on this album, is taken from Red Beat's first single on their own label and recorded at Matrix Studios in London. High energy, new wave rock with original, quirky, unexpected vocals, guitar, bass and drums from cult, London-based indie band, Red Beat , featuring 12 remastered songs from the late 70's.
Red Beat came to prominence during the post-punk era in the London rock scene along with bands like Theatre of Hate, Killing Joke and Ski Patrol. Now for the first time they have released their early catalogue of songs from the early days when they were breaking their balls in small pubs and clubs in London and the south of England, learning the craft. These songs are far more optimistic and up beat than the dour post apocalyptic dub-metal thrash of their later sound on 'The Missing Album'. Originally recorded on a 4-track machine at The Boilerhouse and engineered by Derek Timms, these songs, which were all played in one take by a gig-sharp band, have been painstakingly remastered and repaired by Roy Jones, Red Beat's singer and lyricist for the bulk of this body of songs. The guitarist and drummer are Roy's brothers Martin and Paul, with Majid Ahmed on bass. Influences you can hear include XTC, Blondie, The Ruts, Elvis Costello, Jo Jackson as well as PIL and Killing Joke who's drummer, Big Paul Ferguson was a friend of the bands' and plays on the track 'Television Hum'. This was an experimental and exciting time for rock music and some of these songs show great originality and freshness from a band whose average age must have been around 20.
